The reason many college and university students are victims of violent attacks, is they don’t expect crime to ever effect them. Being prepared is a significant part of keeping your daughter safe while away at college. Many college students are scattered around the off-campus urban community in residential housing, apartments, and private residences. The college or university must assume the responsibility of informing students about dangerous or questionable areas of the surrounding neighborhoods. An ideal time to do this is during freshman orientation. I can’t emphasize enough that law enforcement is overwhelmed and can’t be everywhere. Students must take responsibility for their own personal safety and should always carry some form of non-lethal personal protection and be ready to use it.
